Teaching and Learning Sequence: Machinery Panels (Pastel/paint)
Learning Experience: design, paint and pastel a 6 piece panel on A2 Cartridge
ARTWORK !
Pipes
- On A2 cartridge, draw one pipe from one side to the other, keeping the pipe relatively wide as they will be pasteled.
- Pastel one pipe at a time, remembering to graduate colour from dark to light, finishing off with white. Take care not to go over the edges or over an existing pipe.
ARTWORK 2
Investigation (UI, CI)
1. Share examples of other panel artworks.
2. Teacher-led whole class discussion on the what should be focused on in observational drawing . Discuss shapes, areas of interest, scale etc.
3. Complete an observational drawing on newsprint using pencil. Machinery must hold shape and balance.
4. Questions to focus students:
- What lines can you see?
- What shapes do you see?
- Where are shapes/lines repeated?
- What area catches your eye? Why do you think that?
Producing a artwork (PK, DI)
5. On A2 cartridge rule up according to instructions
6. Discussion on the what a ‘keyhole frameup’ is and how it can be used to create an effective artwork. Frameup various parts of the machinery, discussing the merits of each frameup.
7. Draw using light coloured crayon, different machinery parts using keyhole frames to help focus point of interest.
8. Using watercolour block paint, paint in main shapes - no detail.
9. Allow to dry overnight or use blowdriers.
10. Revisit how to blend pastels - in/out, one side to another, dark to light, light to dark, etc.
11. Introduce colour theory including the colour wheel.
12. Create a balance between colour and white areas. it is very important that white areas stay CLEAN.
13. Use black pastel sparingly.
14. Once dry, go over background with a PVA wash.
