Unveiling Day
Hemi welcomed everyone in Te Reo.
The group split into two, each unwrapping a pou.
Hemi blessed the pou, then said a karakia.
Hemi's brother Ian played his guitar and we sang Te Aroha, with Whetu joining us when we sang it a second time.
Macy then spoke on behalf of the Gateway Impact team.
Macy’s speech:
Tena Koutou katoa
Ko Henari toku papa
Ko Kelly toku mama
Ko Macy ahau
No reira, Tena Koutou,
Tena Koutou, Tena Tatou
Katoa.
My name is Macy Jenkins and I am speaking on behalf of the Gateway Impact Group.
I ask that this group stand with me.
I would like to welcome, all our parents, visitors and especially Heemi Kaka from our local marae, Kerepehi.
Our Impact group identified that the front entrance to the school was not easily noticed by passers-by and that it was boring. One way to address this was to design and paint poles that would show our main entrance. As part of our investigation we visited other schools, looked at our school mural, talked a lot about what creatures make the Hauraki Plains special and how we could represent our learning teams on our poles. Moana, our Junior team is the sea, Whenua - the land, Whetu - the stars and Marama the moon - our senior team. We are very proud of what we have achieved.
We have also placed a plaque with the whakatauki "He waka eke noa".
This proverb means "A canoe which we are all in with no exception"
My group wishes to thank the Board of Trustees, Kat Gilmore, Nigel Higgins, Schulers, Hauraki Engineering, and Barker Contracting for their generous support throughout our project.
We sang Tui Tuia. again Whetu joined us the second time around.
We were the first group to officially through the pou gateway. The rest of the students and parents then followed us through.
We went to the staffroom and had a shared lunch to celebrate our achievement! We even had bubbles - sparkling grape juice!! Super proud of everyone!
Week 8
Hemi Kaka came in and spoke with the students about protocol around opening something as special as this. He is more than happy to come to the opening and be part of the ceremony - doing the blessing and karakia.
Nigel came in and dug the holes. The Gateway team then removed the dirt to the school garden and cleaned away weeds and rubbish from the front garden.
Final coat of sealer put on.
Friday: In the Ground Day!
Wrapped up nice and safe ready for the opening ceremony on Wednesday 10th.
Format from Hemi
1. Everyone assemble at the entrance, 12.30-12.45ish
2. I shall open with welcoming everyone
3. The designated person/s will unveil the two pou (poles)
4. I shall karakia/bless the two pou followed by the hymn Te Aroha
5. Designated person/s will give the meanings and significance of the two pou followed with the waiata Tui, tuia.
6. We can all return to partake in a cuppa and bite.
Note to be sent home about above ceremony, inviting parents and asking for a plate for after the reveal.
Dear Parents/Caregivers
We, the Gateway Impact group are very proud of what we have achieved and we would like to invite you to our opening ceremony for our Gateway pou which will take place after the School Prizegiving on Wednesday. There will be a short ceremony and then we will share a cup of tea and some food.

Week 7
Met with group to decide next steps -
Gateway Opening - Wednesday 10th of Dec, after School Prizegiving
Contacting Mr Higgins (Fencing Contractor) with the following questions: (Ryan, Jamie, Cooper)
- How big do we need to make the hole?
- How deep does the hole have to be?
- What do we need to do to make sure that the poles will stay upright?
- How do we hold our poles up until the concrete is hard enough?
Concrete - Schuler?
Protocol around opening our Gateway Poles (poles are covered)
Email to Mr Fraser (Macy)
- Welcome (Impact Group)
- Karakia + blessing (Mrs Deed)
- Speech ( Impact Group)
- Impact members to take off the covers
- Waiata - Tui, tuia
Met with Mr Higgins (Wednesday) and he explained to the group how much of the pole needs to go into the ground - 1m. He also said that two pieces of pipe needs to be inserted into the base of each pole so there is extra length going into the concrete.
The holes that need to be dug will be 600 x 600 x 1m.
Concrete needed - .800 of a metre. Now need to contact Craig at Schulers about concrete.
Poles will need to be level and braced while the concrete sets.
Aiming for pole digging and placement to happen end of next week (Week 8)
Visit to Schuler's Concrete Yard
(Friday) The Year 6 sub group identified Health and Safety issues before visiting Schuler's yard. Students shared what we are trying to do, asking for concrete to complete our job. Craig from Schuler's was keen to help and will tee up with Nigel to make sure we have enough concrete to concrete our poles in on Thursday/Friday Week 8!
Week 6
Finished detailing on poles, black outline and sealer to come.
Week 4 - 6/11
Week 3 - 30/10
Today we focused on the coral, fish and sky. Our artists were Brooke, Macy, Holly, Cooper, Jamie, Ryan, Tyne.
Week 2 - 23/10
Kat came in during Week 1 and with the help of Morgan and Luke drew the designs onto the poles.
We started painting our poles today - Morgan, Alec, Luke, Brooke, Holly, Ryan, Jamie, Noah, Cooper. We focused on the sea and land parts, painting around each pole.
Week 10 - 25/09
A small delegation (Brooke, Alec, Macy and Holly) went to the BOT meeting and presented the Impact group’s powerpoint on what we had achieved so far and what we would like to do next. Morgan included a slide where she superimposed the piece of pole we had already painted, onto the photo of our present gateway to give the BOT an idea of our vision. The group was asked many questions about pole height, placement, and durability. The BOT has given permission for us to carry on with our project. On the next property walk we will be asked to show where we envision the poles would be placed.
Contact Kat to come in and draw our design on both poles so we are ready to paint Week 1, Term 4.
Work out paint colours and quantities. Resene are having a paint sale in October!
Week 9 - 18/09
Celebration Day! We shared our journey with our parents and guests. Ss did a fantastic job - highly engaged and enthusiastic to share our achievements.
Macy and Tyne working on our photo montage.
Group photo with our prototype. Sub groups working on BOT presentation and Blog ready for BOT meeting Monday the 15th and Impact Celebration Day on Thursday 18th.
Design group continued with design and then moved onto adding part of the design to the piece of pole that had been undercoated ready for the session. Cat worked with this team again, helping draw the design on the pole. Used Resene test pots to paint. Very impressed with outcome.
Second sub group revisited notes made from the previous week and decided to go to Hauraki District Council to find out about the sewage and water lines and where they went past the school. Before we left we looked at Heath & Safety, identifying hazards and ways we could negate these.
On our way we stopped at the sculpture in the domain and found this:
This supports the information we have received from Hemi Kaka and online from Te Ara Encyclopedia of NZ. We have suggested that the design group incorporate basic maori motifs (Koru, etc) within the swamp creatures and waterways we have in the design. Hemi Kaka also thought this was a good way of representing our Maori community links.
At HDC, a map was printed out for us and water and sewage lines identified. Group were fascinated with the ‘birds eye view’ of Ngatea.
Back at school second group, began working on our presentation for Impact Celebration Day, Thursday Week 9. Design group finished painting the pole and received lots of positive feedback. Much excitement around what we are creating!
Week 6 28/08
Email sent to Moana at Kerepeehi School, waiting on reply. Maths session based around Mr Barker’s email about ⅓ of the pole going into the ground. We worked out a strategy to ‘cut’ our pole into 1/3s using metre rulers, paper, string and chalk. Lots of discussion around accuracy and how each sub group got different lengths and how we could eliminate the errors.
Brainstormed what we other information we had to have to move on…
Point raised re representing our Maori community so an email has also been sent to Hemi Kaka. Researched online the pre-European history of Ngatea and the Plains. Was challenging as there is very little. Made notes on what we found. Used skills such as skimming, note taking, paraphrasing and referencing our sources so we know where our information has come from and where we can go back to for more.
Visit HDC re whereabouts of utilities into school.
Research more on our early Maori community.
Use a section of a pile - undercoat, paint with a partial design to take to BOT Meeting (Week 9, 15/09) for approval to continue with our entrance.
Week 5 21/08
Email reply from Steve Barker
Hi Ryan
Thank you for your email. You can get poles from Carters at Kopu in Thames. When I push poles in the ground I push in 1\3 into the ground. If you are swinging a gate I push in 1/2 of the pole.
I think you should go and talk to someone at Carters so that you get a better idea of what you want.
Let me know if you need someone to push them in for you and I will have a look at the job. You will need to check if there are any power/telephone cables and water lines before you get them pushed in.
Any other questions, you can email me again.
Good luck,
Steve
Design group worked on design with Cat.
Other two groups went to Thames to visit Carters and Resene Paints. Peter from Carters talked to the team about poles, what SED looks like, diametre, length and an appropriate length for what we want to do. Group has a better understanding of poles, esp diameter. H5, SED 150mm x 3.6m ($70 each)
At the Resene Paint Shop paint application was explained to the group. We learnt that we need an undercoat ($28?). We can use Resene Test Pots ($4.30) in a huge range of colours and a finishing coat to seal the colours so they stay bright ($38). We came away with paint charts to study in depth.
We decided to stop at St Francis School and check out their 3 pou at the entrance to their school. Viv Lander, the Principal came out and spoke to the group about the meaning of each pou - one represents the Catholic nature of the school, one 17 nationalities that are part of the school and the third represents the school environment (Tikapa, Pohutukawas, etc) At the top of each pole is a Maori design of a human figure painted by one of their talented parents.
Realise that this particular element is missing from our design so will get in touch with Moana at Kerepeehi School and ask for her guidance/advice on any cultural elements that we need to take into account.
Here it is The BEGINNING OF IMPACT 2014!
DISCOVER
1. Setting the Scene (Outcome development & evaluation)
What is the problem/need/ or opportunity we have identified?
At the moment our entrance is boring, there is nothing to say this is us, or where we learn…
We have two entrances - the driveway and the path by the takeaways.
- Sign that incorporates everything we do
- School logo
- Totem poles
- Maori entranceway
- Planter boxes
- Mural/artwork on the PE shed wall facing the road - Maybe the logo?
- On the PE shed facing the courts paintings of all the PE gear available.
- Handprints, footprints like in Whenua
- Hedging to lead into the office
- Sculptures
How will our design impact on people, our community or the environment?

What do we need to find out before we can start planning? (Technological Practice)
How are we going to get the materials for the entrance?
How much are the materials?
How are we going to make it eco friendly ( maybe we could use the Logo.)
What will make the people come so like a hook but not in a story.
Measuring the stuff we need or get.
Plan as a group and make sure everyone agrees on it.
Using the Logo to attract people.
How long will it take to build it?
Using plants to help the entrance.
We need to think what the people want, not what we want.
Show them how we work in our school/what we do in our school.
Try to use as much recycling as we can.
Try to keep it K.I.S.S, which stands for Keep It Simple Stupid.
Have heaps of researching on our school, area etc.
To investigate about the history of Ngatea.
To investigate about who will go through the gate way.
What is our budget and how can we make our gate affordable?
To go to people in our community that specializes in building.
What materials do we need?
How much money are the materials?
The measurements of the materials?
Design the gateway so it does not affect the environment like the wild life.
Where we will source the materials from.

How does their gateway impact their school?
How long did it take to build and how much money did it cost to make?
Week 9 - 26/06
Each group met to go over their doc. Trip proposal group worked out a timeline and met with Mrs Hull about whether we should have 2 day trips or one day trip, splitting the big group into 2 smaller groups.
This means that we can do our visit on one day. Email sent to Mr Fraser. Trip permission form written.
Researched some history of Ngatea.

Term 2 Week 10 - 3/07
Trips to Moanataiari and Waikino
Trips to Moanataiari and Waikino
Moanataiari
Both trips went really well, questions were answered in depth and gave us lots of ideas. Ideas overheard were using our House names/colours (Paatiki - Flounder, Kahui - Flock or herd, Weka - Wood hen, Orewa - ?)
Term 3 Week 1 - 24/07
Went through photos and each group spoke to them. Recorded answers on one doc to see if there were any similarities.
Drew up a timeline, visual reminder of limited time (6 weeks!)
Revisited our entranceways, realised we need to get permission, especially whether we can make a ‘roofed’ gateway
Three groups collaborated together - Alec, Holly and Joshua worded an email to Mr Fraser seeking a meeting to see just what we could do regarding a gateway. Macy, Brooke, Jamie, and Jess made a survey on a google form which was emailed to NPS teachers. Tyne, Noah, Luke, Ryan, Miles, Leon, Cooper researched local history.
Discussed a timeline as outlined in above photo, possibility of using our mural and the murals designer - Cat Gilmore as the basis for our gateway.
Week 2 - 31/07
Thank you letters to be written to Moanataiari School (Mr David Brock) and Waikino School (Mr Colin Pilkinton-Brodie)
2. Survey the people, community or environment
Before you design or make a product, you need to research what sort of design people want. By conducting a survey of people who would use the product you can discover what they like and ensure they will be happy with the finished product.
Prepare the questions and write them below - Use Google Forms as a tool. Embed the form summary below. Undertake the survey.
What we need to bring for Thursday 14/08/14.
- Long sheet of paper.
- Pen.
- Creative minds.
Skype other schools on how they have designed and created their entranceways,
Surveyed the teachers and seven teachers responded.
Surveyed Years 5-8 students

- Alec, Holly and Josh need to meet with Mr Fraser today as we can’t move on without knowing what we can and can’t do. We need to still have access for large vehicles so we cannot have an archway or roof.
- Morgan contacted Kat Gilmore (Mural designer) about coming in next week to talk to us about designing the mural and helping us design a school gateway. She is coming at 11am on Thursday the 7th
Week 3 - 7/09 PLANNING & DESIGN
Awesome discussion with Cat. She went through the NPS Mural, sharing her design process. Helped learners make the connection to themselves and the two school visits - the importance of our history. From here Gateway group shared our journey so far, what we discovered on visiting other schools, etc. Went out the front and looked at our entranceways again. Used whiteboard table to draw ideas, Cat also drew as ideas came thick and fast. Discussed how Native Americans use totem poles to tell their story, thought we could do the same and they would be our gateway. Tyne came up with the idea of a seat on either side of the driveway. Morgan had the idea of representing each teaching team on the poles, starting with Moana (Sea), WHenua (Land), Whetu (stars) and Marama (moon). Idea to mosaic each name and inset into the pole. Formed two groups - Cat is happy to draw up our design with a small group, other group researching poles/posts/piles. Pole group measured various poles around the school looking for a suitable size, came up with…
Week 4 14/08
Cat came in again to work with the pole design team (Morgan, Luke, Joshua and Jesse). They joined A2 cartridge together to create a 2D surface on which to design what the poles might look like. The group went to the library and sourced books and images that would help them with the design. There was a lot of discussion around what creatures we had around us that needed to be represented on the pole design.
The second team researched poles. There was specific vocab related to poles and we needed to find out what H5 SED meant. H5 labeled how the pole was treated, letting the buyer know the conditions the pole best performed in (marine clay?). SED was an acronym for Small End Diameter. This led us to our next question - what is diameter? We used Maths dictionaries and mime to work this out.
We also investigated how we ‘read’ the measurements given - this proved a great discussion point and led to need to actually see poles, talk to someone about what we wanted and whether a pole suited our purpose. Ryan emailed Mr Barker about poles and what we need to know about putting them into the ground.
Also need to visit Carters at Kopu to talk to an expert.
The third team researched paint options, still quite a bit to be done here - need to visit the Resene Paint shop in Thames and talk to an expert.
awesome
